For
some lucky people, Monday morning can’t start soon enough,
because their work is so closely aligned to their motivation.
Motivation is when what we do is so closely aligned to what
we’re good at and linked to our values that we just know we
are on the right path.
I
guess I’m one of the lucky ones who almost prefers Monday
to the weekend – because I can’t wait to get back into the
projects and activities that excite me. But the older
I get and the more people I work with, the more I conclude
that we are all motivated by different things and that we
all need to determine for ourselves what success means to
us.
The
word success often leads to two questions – what is success
and how do you get it?
However, the definition of success can only be answered by
each of us individually. “Success is ultimately an individual
feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction” according to author
Glenn Van Ekeren. Not all of us want to move up the career
ladder, yet this is often seen as the generally accepted definition
of success in our society. Yet success may mean something
very different to you. Are you looking to make a difference
to others, to create something unique in the market or to
have balance where you have time for both your family and
your work? Today it is far more acceptable to focus on a variety
of paths to gain satisfaction in our working life. Don’t rely
on what your family, friends or co-workers define as success.
Ultimately it’s up to you to decide and define what success
means to you.
Living up to others expectations is frustrating and inevitably
impossible. Understanding what is the most important
aspect in your life is one of the first steps to effective
career planning. Unless you define clearly what path
you are on, you may be able to achieve success by others standards
but never your own.
By
defining what you are looking for in your life and what your
own definition of success will be, you create the foundation
for an effective and rewarding career and life. And through
understanding what really motivates us we can build a career
path that is truly satisfying. In essence, by defining and
understanding what motivate us, we are able to build our own
blue-print for success – in fact, to create our own definition
of success.
Take
time to answer these questions now… Looking over the last
year – what were your most rewarding activities or moments?
And looking at the year ahead, what would be the most rewarding
for you? Is it really that promotion or pay-rise or
is it the quality moments shared with family or friends, or
completing that project that will be of value to others.
There will be clues in your answers.
If
you are still struggling to answer these questions, try our
new on-line careerMotivators questionnaire
to develop your own definition of success and the right
path for you. By completing the Career Motivators questionnaire
you are beginning to define what success in life means to
you. It will help define your career path and focus
your thinking on what else you need to do to build a satisfying,
and stimulating life.
When
you combine knowing where you are going, striving to become
the best you can be, with the qualities of hard work and dedication,
we believe that the right things for you will eventually come
your way. As Brian Tracy suggests “Success comes from
doing what you are ideally suited to do, doing it extremely
well, and doing more and more of it.”
